![]() Mediation is not appropriate for everyone. Divorcing couples without children and with little property to divide are sometimes able to work out fair agreements on their own without the help of a mediator. Other parties may be too intent on "winning" their divorce or hurting their spouse or opposing party to be able to mediate effectively, despite the costs. Couples in situations where spousal abuse or substance abuse are involved should carefully consider whether mediation is appropriate. Although they may feel angry or hurt, most couples involved in divorce, family or custody disputes are interested in resolving their disputes as simply and fairly as possible, in order to get on with their lives. Mediation benefits those couples by giving them the information they need to resolve the issues of their divorce and by providing them with a structured environment in which to negotiate.
